Iraq: Car Bomb in Christian Neighbourhood, Ankawa, Claims the lives of Three People

A car bomb in front of a local police station, right next door to the American Consulate in Ankawa, claimed the lives of at least three people and left a dozen wounded.

The attack has shaken the predominantly Christian community in Ankawa, which is refuge to thousands of refugees that fled the onslaught of the Islamic State last year.

Several witnesses confirmed the attack to Open Doors’ partners in Iraq. The blast was followed by gunfire and fears exist that this attack will ignite unrest among the refugees and other Christians living in Erbil. An Open Doors partner said that, “This might be yet another event causing a lot of Christians deciding to hasten emigration.”

A building still under construction, just across from where the attack occurred, used to house hundreds of refugees who were evacuated to another location only a few months before the attack occurred.

Open Doors requests prayer for Christians in Ankawa. Please pray for their safety and that the peace of God may govern their hearts. Also pray for the pastors and church leaders, that they will respond wisely in comforting their flocks.
