Women of the persecuted Church: Jenny
Jenny is a 12-year-old girl from the Philippines. She is part of one of the poorest tribes in her community. Among the 13 Muslim tribes in her region, hers is the one most discriminated against.
Opportunities for education are far beyond their reach. For this reason, many of the young girls marry at a young age, often as soon as they reach puberty. Such marriages hinder the potential of many young women.
At school, Jenny experiences discrimination from judgmental classmates and teachers because of her tribal background and faith in Jesus. “They treat me badly and don’t like me. I also hear the mean things they say about me and my family.”
Jenny and other girls like her didn’t have many prospects for their future.
This is why Open Doors’ local partners started a literacy class there – to offer Jenny and others like her the opportunity to dream about a different future.
Fortunately, thanks to the literacy program, she is now being equipped with the necessary tools to excel academically. A bright flame burns in her heart – and now she can dream big.
Today, Jenny is among the top students in her class. “I can now read and write well and perform well in my schoolwork. The literacy class has helped many children and inspires us to dream big, knowing that Jesus is with us,” Jenny shares.
“I want to make a difference in other people’s lives and become a teacher. I also want to become a youth leader in our home church and help others to grow in their faith.”
