Pastor Andrew Brunson from the United States is set to appear before a Turkish criminal court on 16 April on charges related to espionage and terrorism, which could see him jailed for up to 35 years.
He was arrested in October 2016, apparently over his alleged missionary activities in support of two terrorist enemies of the Turkish government. What seems more likely, however, as the case has unfolded, is that the pastor is being used as Turkey’s political hostage, as leverage in negotiations with the US.
From his prison cell, pastor Andrew wrote: “Let it be clear. I am in prison not for anything I have done wrong, but because of who I am – a Christian pastor. I desperately miss my wife and children. Yet I believe this to be true: it is an honour to suffer for Jesus Christ, as many have before me. My deepest thanks for all those around the world who are standing with me and praying for me.”
Please continue to pray for pastor Andrew and his lawyer, Ismail Cem Halavurt, as they prepare for him to stand trial. Pray that he will be vindicated of any wrongdoing and that he will be reunited with his family. Pray also for his family as they anxiously wait for the trial to end
Thank you for your prayers.
