{"id":26358,"date":"2021-03-08T17:06:45","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T15:06:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.opendoors.org.za\/covid-19-fuels-hidden-pandemic-of-abuse-and-exploitation-against-women\/"},"modified":"2021-03-08T17:12:11","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T15:12:11","slug":"covid-19-fuels-hidden-pandemic-of-abuse-and-exploitation-against-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.opendoors.org.za\/afr\/covid-19-fuels-hidden-pandemic-of-abuse-and-exploitation-against-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19 fuels \u201chidden pandemic\u201d of abuse and exploitation against women (Slegs in Engels beskikbaar)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Covid-19\u00a0is\u00a0fuelling\u00a0a\u00a0growing, hidden\u00a0\u201cshadow pandemic\u201d of gender-based violence,\u00a0abduction\u00a0and trafficking, directed\u00a0towards\u00a0Christian\u00a0women\u00a0and girls around the world.\u00a0This is one of the findings of a new report\u00a0commissioned by\u00a0the ministry organisation Open Doors International, which supports and strengthens persecuted Christians all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>The report, entitled \u201cSame faith, different persecution: WWR 2021 gender-specific religious persecution (GSRP)\u201d, was published ahead of International Women\u2019s Day,\u00a0which is celebrated worldwide on Monday 8 March.<\/p>\n<p>Open Doors Southern Africa also hosted an online women\u2019s prayer event on Sunday evening, 7 March, to celebrate International Women\u2019s Day. During this event, testimonies were shared from women living for Christ in some of the most dangerous places on earth. The well-known singer and channel director of TBN Africa, Loyiso Bala, who is Open Doors\u2019 ambassador, was the special guest at the women\u2019s prayer event.<\/p>\n<p>The spotlight is currently on the plight of women and girls \u2013 especially on the African continent \u2013 with the shocking news that about 300 girls were kidnapped on Friday 26 February 2021 from a school in northern Nigeria. This happened just nine days after the kidnapping of 42 people from another school in the same region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vulnerability of Christian women and girls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The report states that the Covid-19 pandemic has made Christian women and girls even more vulnerable\u00a0than before. During lockdown, they face persecution and opposition from within their own families and communities \u2013 who are hostile to their faith.<\/p>\n<p>On top of this, states and militants have exploited the\u00a0current\u00a0situation with\u00a0Covid-19,\u00a0\u201cweaponizing women\u2019s bodies to\u00a0inflict harm on their minority Christian communities\u00a0and limit growth of the Church\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The report\u00a0looks at the nature and extent of\u00a0gender-specific\u00a0religious persecution (GSRP) towards both women and men\u00a0over twelve months, covering the period from October 2019 to September 2020.\u00a0It focuses largely on the 50 countries highlighted in\u00a0Open Doors\u2019\u00a0annual\u00a0World Watch List,\u00a0where Christians face the worst persecution and oppression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key findings of the report<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among\u00a0the\u00a0key findings\u00a0for women are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A\u00a0major\u00a0increase in, largely hidden,\u00a0psychological\u00a0and physical\u00a0violence towards\u00a0Christian convert\u00a0women.\u00a0According to the report, \u201cvulnerable converts\u00a0are\u00a0at greater risk when\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0locked inside\u00a0in confinement\u00a0with their families,\u00a0who may abuse them for leaving the family\u2019s or community\u2019s religion to convert to Christianity\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0significant spread in trafficking of women and girls, forcing\u00a0them\u00a0into marriages or\u00a0sexual slavery.\u00a0In\u00a0Gulf States, for instance,\u00a0\u201clockdowns have reduced the number of people on the streets, making it both easier to target Christian women and girls, and harder to recover\u00a0them\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>A continued rise in reports of rape and other sexual violence.\u00a0One\u00a0unnamed persecution worker in the Central African Republic\u00a0says:\u00a0\u201cThis violence is a persecution weapon, a way of making Christian women vulnerable and also traumatising the community.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Among the\u00a0major\u00a0forms of persecution for men are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Christian men\u00a0facing more extreme physical harm or even death.\u00a0Church leaders are\u00a0especially\u00a0targeted as examples to show other Christians the treatment they can expect.<\/li>\n<li>Economic harassment\u00a0or\u00a0imprisonment.\u00a0By limiting their ability to provide,\u00a0the\u00a0entire family is rendered more vulnerable.<\/li>\n<li>Military\/militia conscription.\u00a0For men, forced conscription into the military or militias\u00a0rose by 40%, forced into service against their consciences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Families under attack<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the pressure points faced by men and women differ, but the\u00a0aims\u00a0are\u00a0often the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe very notion of family is, by implication, under attack\u2026 Persecutors are deliberately taking advantage of what the religious community holds to as a holy institution and an intimate relational\u00a0act.\u00a0Sexual violence, trafficking and forced marriages are actually weaponizing women\u2019s bodies to\u00a0limit growth of the Church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile, for males, removing or limiting\u00a0their\u00a0ability to provide for their families, weakens their dependent families and leaves them vulnerable, as well as shames the man\/boy who is unable to provide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trafficking and sexual slavery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perpetrators of the\u00a0forms of\u00a0gender-specific religious persecution vary from region to region.\u00a0Looking at trafficking and sexual slavery:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the Middle East, North and sub-Saharan Africa, extremist groups such as Boko Haram\u00a0use \u201cideologically motivated grooming\u201d,\u00a0forced marriages\u00a0and kidnapping as a tool to Islamise girls and young women\u00a0and deplete the Christian community.<\/li>\n<li>Across\u00a0parts of Asia,\u00a0girls\u00a0from poor Christian communities\u00a0are singled out\u00a0and\u00a0trafficked\u00a0to China for arranged marriages, where\u00a0sex-selective abortion\u00a0has led to a shortage of young women.<\/li>\n<li>Criminal gangs and drug cartel leaders in Latin America threaten to kill Christian families if they refuse to give up their daughters. This acts as way of silencing\u00a0churches and church leaders who are challenging the\u00a0effective\u00a0rule of these gangs\u00a0over\u00a0their\u00a0villages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Ms Helene Fisher, co-author of the report, says: \u201cIt\u2019s time that the faith factor is acknowledged. While\u00a0race and gender\u00a0are acknowledged as vulnerabilities in conflict zones, a person\u2019s faith generally is\u00a0not. On International Women\u2019s Day, we need policymakers to understand the opposition Christian women around the world face, as they attempt to peacefully live out their chosen faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the report<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The GSRP report has been released annually since 2018. The 2021 report\u00a0used data gathered\u00a0by Open Doors World Watch Research for the 2020 World Watch List. Regionally based experts collected primary\u00a0data from global caregivers, church leaders,\u00a0focus groups and\u00a0regional experts.
